Tech Tuesday Tip: Gear Fluid 101 - The 25 Hour Habit That Prevents Most Gearbox Issues

If we had to pick one single maintenance item that prevents the most trouble on transmissions and differentials, it wouldn't be a part.

It would be fluid nobody ever changed.

Why This One Item Matters So Much - Gear fluid does two jobs: it lubricates the gear teeth under load, and it carries heat away from the bearings. When it breaks down, from age, heat cycling, or contamination, both jobs suffer at once.

The Interval Change gear fluid every 25 hours of riding,  whichever comes first. If you can't remember the last time it was changed, treat it as overdue.

Spec Matters
Don't assume, check your owner's manual or give us a call with your year/make/model and we'll confirm before you buy the wrong bottle.

How to Check It Yourself
Pull the drain plug or dipstick and look at the fluid. It should run clear to amber, If it's milky, gray, or foamy, water has gotten in, that's worth having looked at right away rather than waiting for your scheduled interval, since water-contaminated fluid can affect bearings quickly.

The Math That Makes This Easy
A gear fluid change is inexpensive and takes about fifteen minutes. It's one of the highest-leverage maintenance items on the entire vehicle, and it's the one most owners skip.
