Torque It Right: The Correct Spindle Nut Torque Spec for Every East Lake Axle
We get this question constantly, on every platform we sell for, Polaris, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Can-Am, Arctic Cat, Honda: "What's the torque spec on this axle?"
Here's the straight answer. Every CV axle we sell at East Lake Axle installs to a spindle/axle nut torque spec of 70-80 ft-lb.
That range is consistent across our entire catalog, regardless of make or model.
This post explains why that number is what it is, why the range matters more than the exact figure, and how to torque it correctly so you're not back under the vehicle in a week.
Why 70-80 ft-lb, and Why a Range Instead of One Number
The spindle nut isn't just holding the axle in the hub, it's setting the preload on your wheel bearing. That's the part most DIY installers don't think about.
Too loose, and the axle can walk out under load or the bearing runs with excess play, leading to premature wear and the wobble/grinding complaints we hear on warranty calls. Too tight, and you overload the bearing, generate excess heat, and shorten its service life just as fast, sometimes faster.
The 70-80 ft-lb range gives you enough clamping force to fully seat the axle and correctly preload the bearing, without crushing it. It's a tight window on purpose. Don't treat "somewhere around there" as good enough, use a calibrated torque wrench and land inside that range every time.

Tools You Need Before You Start
- A torque wrench rated for at least 100 ft-lb, calibrated within the last year
- The correct size socket for your spindle nut (commonly 27mm, 30mm, or 32mm depending on platform, verify before you're under the vehicle)
- A breaker bar for initial nut removal/loosening (spindle nuts are torqued tight, you will not break them loose with a torque wrench)
- A new cotter pin or new staking punch, depending on whether your platform uses a castellated nut or a staked nut
- Wheel chocks and jack stands rated for your vehicle's weight, never trust a jack alone
Step-by-Step: Torquing the Axle Nut Correctly
- Seat the axle fully. Before you get anywhere near final torque, make sure the axle is bottomed out in the hub and the splines are fully engaged. A partially seated axle will give you a false torque reading and will not hold.
- Thread the nut on by hand first. Confirm it's not cross-threaded before you put a wrench on it.
- Snug the nut with the vehicle's wheel still off the ground or with the brake held. You need something to prevent the hub from spinning while you apply torque. Many techs reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground with the brake applied for final torque, check what your specific platform's service manual calls for.
- Bring it to final torque in the 70-80 ft-lb range using a calibrated torque wrench. Don't estimate. Don't use "hand tight plus a grunt." Use the tool.
- Secure the nut. If it's a castellated nut, line up the next slot with the cotter pin hole and install a new cotter pin, never reuse one. If it's a staked nut, stake it into the axle groove per your platform's spec.
- Re-torque check after a short break-in ride. On most platforms, a re-check after the first 25-50 miles or first ride is good practice, especially after any axle replacement. Confirm it's still in spec and hasn't backed off.
Common Mistakes We See
Under-torquing "to be safe." This is the opposite of safe. An under-torqued spindle nut is one of the most common causes of premature wheel bearing failure and can allow the axle to work loose over time. If you're not confident in your torque wrench reading, replace the tool, not the target number.
Over-torquing "for good measure." Cranking well past 80 ft-lb doesn't add security, it preloads the bearing beyond spec, generates excess heat under load, and can shorten bearing life dramatically. More torque is not more safety here.
Reusing an old cotter pin or skipping the stake. The nut can be perfectly torqued and still back off over time without proper mechanical retention. Don't skip this step to save five minutes.
Torquing before the axle is fully seated. If the axle isn't bottomed out, your torque wrench reading is meaningless, you're measuring resistance from a partially engaged spline, not the actual clamping force on the bearing.
